About Oconomowoc, Wisconsin
During the 1870’s through the 1930’s, the wealthier families from
Milwaukee, Chicago and St. Louis left big city life to avoid the heat.
Oconomowoc became widely known for its beautiful lakes and restful
environment. They built many beautiful palatial “cottages” on Fowler
Lake, Lac LaBelle, and Oconomowoc Lake. Many of these cottages
still exist and can be seen when taking the “Fowler Lake Walk,” a
popular 35 minute tour around the lake. This walk was designed to
give a glimpse into Oconomowoc's past when it was known as the
"Newport of the West". The self-guided tour is about two miles in
length and takes about one hour to complete.
